Brief History

Himalaya Crusade was founded by Late Rev. Dr. S. Sodemba in 1978 with a vision to fulfill the great commission and the greatest commandment of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The revival of 1942 that swept Kalimpong, West Bengal, India with the enormous manifestations of the Holy Spirit serves as a preliminary step for the origin of Himalaya Crusade. The revival then spread like fire in the Himalayan region and to the plains. Dr. S. Sodemba also personally experienced the heavenly power and the presence of the Holy Spirit that he asserts in his book, Fire out of the Himalayan Mountains (Kalimpong: 1990, p. 11), “On Sunday in October 1967, as I was crying out to God in prayer that I was not satisfied with just serving within the confines of the church and that I wished to go to yonder mountains, valleys, plains, and even the regions beyond. As I was praying, I saw the heavens opened and the glories of heaven. I heard the voice of God saying, ‘Sodemba, I have heard your cries and now am commissioning you to go to the mountains, valleys, to your country and even across the seven seas with my Gospel. Lo I am with you always, even to the end of the world.’ I was happy to hear the audible voice of God and receive the divine commission.” The outcome of this revival and the personal encounter of God’s power resulted into massive evangelism and church plantings along with the charity in the Himalayan region and beyond even to other countries like Bhutan and Nepal.

The organization was officially named and registered under the West Bengal Act XXVI of 1961. Himalaya Crusade is an indigenous and independent ministry founded at Kalimpong purely as the fruit of the revival of 1940-1944 in the Himalayas. It is  a free institution without any control and supremacy from anywhere else except the Lord’s. It is the spirit-guided community in fellowship having like-minded aims to preach the gospel of Jesus and save the souls. It envisions with the bond of unity amongst all the Himalaya Crusade churches through the regional committees in the love of Jesus Christ, maintain closer relations with each church.

After the sudden demise of Rev. Dr. S. Sodemba on 11th May 2001, Rev. Mrs. Ruth Sodemba and her youngest son Rev. Joseph Sodemba along with the board members of the organization operate the organization. At present the organization ministers with more than two hundred fifty churches, a theological institute, educational schools, vocational institutions and through charity programs. Himalaya Crusade with its entire team is committed to work for the noble cause of the Kingdom of God. The organization envisions to finally giving all glory to God through its entire ministries.
